tl;dr: Justice for Black people is not a trend, it’s a centuries-long movement. But one action you can take right now is to listen to Black Lives Matter intellectuals.
LEARN
Tamika Mallory is an activist famous for organizing the Women’s Marches of the late 2010’s. After the murder of George Floyd, she gave a viral speech explaining the rage in the streets. Here are the last 3 minutes.
Kimberly Jones, an author, followed this with a stunning speech of her own, carried widely by the media. Here’s the full speech.
PLAN
Select one action that you can take to advance the cause of justice. Here are some starters:
- Professor Kendi from American University created a reading list on Black issues, including award-winning novels, political analysis, and books on science.
- Time Magazine compiled a list of ways you can participate in the movement, ranging from joining in the streets to supporting Black businesses.
DO
- Make a commitment to take one action, and share that commitment with one other person. If you’re White, share with another White person because social pressure is helping the movement spread, and your Black friends may need a breather.
- If you’re joining a protest, Kandist Mallett at Teen Vogue offers advice, including how to recognize a “police kettle.”
